to say the pro-israel lobby which is a very diverse collection of organizations. some of them with very different motives. what got me really wasn't so much the adjective, although i found the adjective odd, it was the verb, intimidates. chuck hagel for 12 years was a senator from the state of nebraska. i looked it up. there are about 6,100 jews in the state of nebraska. i can imagine many lobbies that might have intimidated hagel when he was in the senate. the ethanol lobby, for example, the farm lobby, various other kinds of lobbies. the nra, the pro-life lobby and so on. it's hard to see how he levels a charge that this lobby intimidates people. now, are there pro-israel groups that are lobbying on behalf of israel? absolutely. are there dozens, if not hundreds of lobbies in washington operating in the same way all the time. so, this peculiar charge that this particular jewish lobby intimidates senators was something i found very disturbing and, obviously, not alone in this view. >> but you have writing in the "times" essentially about your column. it is bullying and name calling to

will be the election in israel. president obama has to be able to manage the relationship with the prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, who everybody thinks is going to win, and see if he can keep him from going to war against iran. if that's what the u.s. feels should be the case. beyond that, the negotiations that are already under way will require sensible action from iran but also political courage from the president and from this administration because you cannot -- it's not a one-way process. it will take political courage and political capital to say to iran, you can enrich only to this amount and we'll have strong processes in place. we'll able to monitor. people in congress, in israel, they don't want any enrichment. that will be the challenge for the president --? north korea, do you see that as a real threat? >> north korea may very well launch another nuclear test. other diplomats have told me that's a possibility. it's not the kind of immediate threat that some of the other countries are. nobody really believes that north korea is going to launch a nuclear weapon against either its ne

the main pro israel lobbying group the jewish lobby. he's gotten a lot of questions about that. also questions about what kin of sanctions against iran he has supported. he has been skeptical of unilateral sanctions and this is something the white house very much acknowledges, but they point to the fact that he supported sanzes against iran backed by a coalition. the u.s. and other countries. president obama sort of in a veiled way referred to this yesterday and his commence in the east room and he said that haggle realizes that america is strongest when it stands with its allies. i will tell you, soledad, the white house feels that although this will no doubt be a tough confirmation process, that hagel will get some really tough questions from republicans and democrats who at this point, many of them holding back on endorsely hagel, the white house and president obama feel when hagel has a chance to answer those questions, he will give good answers, convincing answers, that will get him the support he needs in the process. to that end, it was at least twice yesterday that he was urg
